Dump Diets Forever!

Are you READY to Dump Diets Forever?? Then read on my friend and take note, I wrote this quite a few years ago so I bet the statistics have gone up even more!

Did You Know:

  • 97% of individuals who lose weight on a diet will regain their weight within three years.

  • Dieting creates more preoccupations with food.

  • Dieting can slow your body's metabolism creating an imbalance to where you will gain weight eating fewer calories (see Biggest Loser Blog here).

  • Dieting does not address the whole body, including the triggers, cravings and unhealthy behaviors.

  • Dieting is pre-programmed, making your favorite foods forbidden during the dieting process.

  • Dieting creates dis-empowerment and less self-fulfillment with harsh restrictions and firm guidelines that have been developed by some other "authority."

Dieting Casualty Statistics

  • Almost half of American women are on a diet on any given day.

  • One in four men are on a diet on any given day. 50% of nine and 10-year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet.

  • 35% of "normal dieters" progress to pathological dieting. Of those, one in four will progress to partial or full syndrome eating disorders.

  • Americans spend over $40 billion on dieting and diet related products each year.

Ditch diets and turn to Mindful Eating so you don’t feel guilty when you eat. Learn to recognize your own hunger and remember that hunger is a good thing. Hunger is telling us we need fuel for our body and brain to function properly - this is good!

Look for fullness signals and remember hunger and fullness signals are important in having your metabolism work for you. When you’re hungry, it means your body is working properly. If you’ve ignored or suppressed your hunger for years, it’s time to find it again and make peace with it. Many of my clients report they don’t ever feel hungry and/or don’t know what this means.

Working with a Registered Dietitian can help determine what “your” personal hunger cues are and how this is positive for your body, vs. a nuisance - as many of my clients report. Hunger cues can range from a grumbling stomach to a headache, weakness, tired, fatigue, dizzy, etc.

Bonus: Ditch the word diet from your vocabulary and talk about your eating as a “way of eating”.
